While I benefit from it as a consumer, the fact that reasonably new games are discounted to "fire sale" prices on steam does discourage me from paying full price for new games. Although I think that a low price/high margin business model is viable, the discounted games will hurt the sale of full priced games because many people (like me) will wait the 6 to 12 months to buy it at a discount.
Now, I could be wrong but I suspect that Nintendo doesn't want to publish sales data because that will influence sales in undesirable ways. It is not (exactly) the same thing, but I have noticed on the android tablet marketplace that many of the more useful/better apps I've found were (somewhat) difficult to find because the apps are ranked by popularity/sales. I could be wrong but I suspect that the average user will choose an app based on the first few pages of results and this means that popularity/high-sales increases sales.
