Nintendo has dominated and will most likely forever dominate the handheld Market. They are just great at making the perfect handheld games and making you go broke over it. ;) The Vita so far looks like it'll fail. The launch titles for Japan have already almost slide off the charts (only two on their and they are really low, too) and Sony doesn't have those powerhouse exclusives going for them, Nintendo has it all practically. Nintendo's plan seems to already be in action; all they need is to get a Colored Pokemon game, a Zelda, an Animal Crossing, sprinkle on a few great 3rd party titles and voila! Nintendo will dominate again.
