The same can be said about those who believe it will be priced at (significantly) more than $300 ...
While the rumoured components are likely heavily modified, they're based on old hardware that (in some cases) has already been surpassed by low budget hardware. Certainly, the rumours might not be true but there is no reason to believe that the system itself would be particularly expensive.
When it comes to the controller, we know that it is a dummy device that requires the Wii U system to manage all of the processing related to it. While it is (likely) a little more complicated and expensive than this, it should be similar to creating an XBox 360/PS3 controller with a 7 inch resistive touch screen in it. Being that you can pick up one of these touch screens from suppliers on the web in small quantities for $10 to $15 with the suppliers and manufacturers turning a large profits, I highly doubt it would cost Nintendo more than $10 more than current generation controllers cost to manufacture. This will (of course) have a greater impact on retail price than the increase to manufacturing cost would imply, but it would be foolish to assume that Nintendo would have to sell this system for unusually high prices based on the controller.
