From what Sony has said in the past, they were making at least a small profit from each PS3 sold starting in 2010. Near the end of 2009, they were able to get production costs down to ~70% of what they were originally. This would reduce the costs down to ~$250 per unit. I'm sure they have got it down a little further over the past 2 years, so they would AT LEAST break even if they drop it to ~$199 next year.
MS is overdue for a pricecut. The only reason the 360 has been selling so well this holiday season is because of the crazy deals all the stores have been having for it here in the States. Giving away $100 giftcards with every purchase, as well as the $149 4GB 360 & $199 360 Kinect SKUs that were available on Black Friday. Next year, MS will cut the price, as it won't want to let the PS3 gain another 1.5 million lead right before the holidays again. They also will want to detract people from purchasing a Wii U.
2014? Maybe. 2015? No chance in hell. MS and Sony are not going to let Nintendo have a 3 year lead on them this gen. And with rumors flying around that developers have already started working on NeXbox and PS4 games, I doubt they will be coming as late as 2014, either. 2012 E3 announcement, with a launch in 2013 sounds about right to me for both. As far as costs go, I don't know what MS has planned, but Sony has already announced they plan on spending a lot less than they did on the PS3. A big part of this is going to come from sticking with Blu-ray, instead of developing a new format. They will most likely stick with a tech similar to the Cell, as opposed to developing a new type of CPU. This will make a lot more money available for RAM and a powerful GPU. So I don't think a $400-$500 PS4 that is quite a bit more powerful than the Wii U is out of the question.
