to be fair the sales of a launch game are not comparable to those of a game out on a matured console. There is no way skyward sword will be able to hold up as well as twilight princess did for so long, so to match its sales it would need to catch up very quickly as in by the next holidays.

A good example is resistance and resistance 2. Resistance 2's first 10 weeks of sale were significantly higher then resistance 1, and it didn't even get close to matching the original's sales.

I am looking beyond just the sales numbers, but how much the game is discussed and has a buzz in regards to relevance.  I am not seeing that much excitement over Skyward Sword being released as I am over Skyrim.  Maybe I am missing something.

Zelda is a benchmark franchise remembered by a lot of people.  But, it doesn't seem to be as much of interest as Skyrim appears to be.  If I am wrong, feel free to show otherwise.

I think you are correct in your observations.

It's not that Skyrim has stolen anything (and I don't think you meant it that way anyway), but it's clear that with Skyrim the Elder Scrolls franchise has surpassed Zelda in terms of relevance and buzz. It's no contest really. Skyrim will sell at least 12 million copies on three platforms and become the best selling RPG of all time (in the traditional sense) and in addition be experienced by millions of PC gamers who will download it for free. The latest Zelda will sell around half of that.

The Elder Scrolls has taken huge steps forward since Morrowind in 2002 (the first game I played in the series) and is now one of the biggest franchises in gaming. Meanwhile Zelda has taken a small step back for every game since Ocarina of Time.
