Wow at the 3DS numbers being bigger than the Vita's on LAUNCH WEEK.

The beginning of a trend, or just an oddity in the history of a successful handheld?

I believe that's two days of Vita vs full week of 3DS.  Also not sure what people were expecting.  Vita sold a lot more than PSP at launch, which pretty much confirms that Sony is looking solid in Japan for handhelds vs where it started with PSP launch.  The PSP was like the original Xbox - the latest pretender to an apparently untouchable foe (Nintendo handhelds).  Despite 3DS and competition from it's own stablemate plus smartphones/tablets the Vita has launched pretty well relative to it's predecessor, with a decent library of games sharing a decent level of sales at retail - download number are of course unknown but I preume some of the new Vita owners bought and downloaded stuff with their new gadgets.

Now it'll be down to how the device either blooms or wilts over time and how well the libary grows and sells.

OT generally - decent seasonal boost for Wii but I guess PS3 takes the year in Japan overall.  Okay PS3 boost but looks like the lukewarm reception of FFXIII impacted both FFXIII-2 plus desire for it's special consoles.

Square really need to take note.  Mind you personally I think they've made one bad move after another this gen - overly suppprting 360 early on in the hopes of gaining traction in the West, which didn't seem to work and left them struggling on PS3 which was far more dominant locally in Japan, then seeming to shift back to PS3 a bit by keeping FFXIII exclusive in Japan but getting mauled for the games approach and producing a sub par 360 version (relative to PS3 it was okay and playable enough IMO).  And that's not even getting started on how they screwed up FFXIV on PC with the subsequent huge delay for PS3.

Great 3DS sales - the device is certainly looking more than stable now and certain to thrive I think.  360 weak as ever in Japan but nothing is going to shift that now.  PSP sold okay I thought given Vita launch - I'll be curious to see how the two devices stabilize relative to each other.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
