That's exactly the feeling i get! All the little things you mentioned such as dashing really make the game a lot more fast paced and action packed. Backtracking certainly is more fun because you explore new areas which would previously be inaccessible.
I played spirit tracks earlier today and it wasn't the same as playing something like ocarina of time. I think 2d zelda games are alright to play.
