Good number, especially considering the small installed base compared to the PS2. But it will never get 10 million, not even close. That is in no way an indication of poor performance though, it has sold roughly about the pace I imagined before launch and has done very well.
People who expected, and even guaranteed, 10 million lifetime saw themselves blind on Prologue sales and overestimated first week sales and sales potential in Japan.
Japan will never be the same as a home console market after this generation, they seem to have shifted their primary focus on handheld gaming for the foreseeable future.

GT5 is still tracking better than GT4 (11.38m).

It's in the way to top 10 million.

The Wii was tracking way better than the PS2, we all saw how that went. The past is often an indication but rarely a confirmation of the future. There's also the whole "shipped vs sold" issue at hand here.

The Americas and Japan sales are just not good enough, Europe alone cannot move 7 million units that it will probably take to reach 10 million. I say its still out of the question. Of course, only time will tell and I sure wouldn't mind 10 million, seeing as how the GT franchise is easily my favourite racing series and even in my top 5 of all time franchises!
