Apples to oranges, though.  The PS2 had to deal with huge powerhouse sales of the Xbox and Gamecube in it's 6th year. 

What!?!?! Lol!! The XBox didn't even last 6 years; what are you talking about. Unless you were being sarcastic. The PS2 actually launched a year before the XBox and Gamecube and just about every developer who knew gaming code had jumped on the PS2 band wagon. Microsoft pretty much had to beg and plead to get any Japan developers on board to make games for their XBox.
