You can predict the PS4 will have a wide and balanced lineup, but PS3 didn't, so why should you?

However I think Sony will be smarter with the PS4 launch now that MS is a confirmed compeditor (for PS3, the gen before that the XB sold like crap compared to PS2, so it wasn't a confirmed compeditor, and neither was Nintendo, but boy was Sony hurt by their cockyness).

Unlike the PS2 to PS3 gen change, I think we will see less current gen games released near or after the release of PS4, and more next gen games. Meaning if PS3 were PS2 and PS4 were PS3, we would have seen GT4 and God of War 2 as early PS3 titles.

Someone else pointed out a good....point. It;s likely Sony will be making their studios (like Naughty Dog) make new IP's for the end of PS3 because of strong software sales, and old IP's (like Uncharted) will be early PS4 titles used to pursway new console buyers to get a PS4 (since they know Uncharted is excellent, but The Last of Us could be anything).

You yourself gave the answer to your question in the paragraph you wrote immediately after!     Sony surely wished to have a balanced lineup at PS3 launch, but it couldn't, and it had to complete it later, because MS launched its second console very early (this also forced Sony to price PS3 too high, doubling the damage). Also, due to the XBox 1 disaster, Sony didn't expect MS to become a competitor so strong so quickly, nor did it expect Ninty home consoles to have such an incredible resurrection with Wii. Now it knows all this and it knows it must be prepared to compete with (at least) two strong companies, so it MUST be ready, and a more balanced and wide launch lineup is part of being ready. About PS3 games released after PS4 launch, I just think they'll be in an adequate number depending on how well PS3 will keep on selling and how well Sony will wish it to sell. About your last paragraph, I agree too, it's a good point.

I don't think Sony got a balanced lineup until 2009 when Uncharted 2 came out, and even then, why own a PS system until GT comes out? Now Sony is killing it with the PS3, and it's a shame they didn't put out this kind of software earlier. They could have killed MS cold if they pushed this stuff early, but I guess like you say, they didn't expect MS to get so big.

I hope Sony pulls something nice at the launch of PS4. PSV doesn't look to have an amazing opening, Nintendo really tricked them with the $250 3DS, and now the PSV is still way out of my price range for a handheld system.

Can't wait for E3, where we will at least see some Wii U games playing (and get a taste of 8th gen consoles), and maybe PS4 and NExtBox will be announced.
