Basically, ME was more of a roleplaying game whereas ME 2 stripped a lot of the roleplaying elements in favour of more shooter/action elements. Some did not like this approach, I was one of them. Think Dragon Age vs Dragon Age 2. By the looks and sound of it, the development has gone further in the same direction now and I expect even more action and shooting/running and less roleplaying in ME 3.
I do understand the appeal of the series scince I'm a sucker for sci-fi but the series took a turn for the worse with the second game and the first one had some pretty glaring issues as well as far as design was concerned.
