The game was released in Europe last Friday, but a bunch of us got it earlier. Compared to the US we have lots of smaller local, or national gaming stores, rather than the huge multinational ones, so release dates can be surprisingly flexible. I got it last Wednesday and made a thread about it.
Can't say I've seen any advertising, and the guy at the store was curious as to what kind of a game it was. Apparently he thought it looked like a regular silly kids game, and couldn't figure why a bunch of people he knew to be fanatical long time gamers had been preordering it. Most of my gamer geek friends with a Wii have bought it, but I didn't expect it to get much mainstream attention. The news of the TV ads in the UK have made me slightly more optimistic.
