And yet the shipment numbers imply something that is not true. Sony's definition of shipments (for most of the PS2's generation) included units manufactured but not sold - mostly those given to customers as free replacements under warranty. Whereas all other companies (and since just before the PS3 launch, Sony as well) track shipped units only as those actually sent to stores for sale.

Links, please? Especially about the warranty part. I'm pretty sure they used to report those they had shipped to their own warehouses, then right before the PS3 launched, switched to those sold to retail. Of course, even with that method it doesn't matter because within a year of shifting methods most, if not all, of those PS2s in their warehouses would have already shipped out. So, I doubt there are any discrepansies in their data.
