So, you would rather press button A for a sideways slice, button A and forward on the d-pad for vertical slice, and button B for forward stab. Or, you can slice sideways for a sideways slice, swing vertical for a vertical slice, and a forward stab for a forward stab. Maybe it's just me but the latter seems more simple and natural.
