I play hotseat myself sometimes, on higher difficulties it makes for great fun! You need a clever ally (yourself 
) to survive against the computer on Deity and computer allies make for fickle companions that often make stupid demands along the way.
I think I've managed to win one game on Deity without hotseat or LAN gaming and it was sheer luck, I was handed a bunch of gold from villages and had a nuts starting position providing massive resources.
I don't find it strange at all to play hotseat with yourself, I used to do it with the Heroes game as well.
