Ummm... what? First of all, Nintendo invested alot of money into the company when they bought a 49% stake in Rare in 1994... it's not like Rare begged Nintendo to throw a ton of money at them just for developing a few exclusive games like many 3rd parties have done over the years with other companies like Sony and M$.
Secondly, from the time Rare became a 2nd party developer for Nintendo in '94 to the time M$ bought them in late '02, they released nearly 30 games for Nintendo systems, some of which were among the biggest selling games for their respective systems like DKC for the SNES and Goldeneye for the N64. They averaged a release output of more than 3 games a year across all Nintendo platforms, and about 2 a year for the N64 alone... no other company besides Nintendo themselves had such a frequent output of AAA games as Rare did, and to this day no other second party has come close to achieving the release output or big sales that Rare achieved. Retro Studios is the closest thing to Rare, but they've only put out 4 games in 10 years... all of which are Nintendo IPs.
The main problem that caused and end to their relationship was that Nintendo became too controlling and demanding. Examples of this are Nintendo insisting Rare instert Nintendo characters like Fox in an original game like Dinosaur Planet, which was originally scheduled for the N64 and rumored to be a "Zelda killer", or when Rare totally scrapped their original platformer Conker 64 and made in into Conker's BFD as a big "F-U" to Nintendo and their stereotypical "kiddy" image.
I wouldn't want Nintendo to buy Rare now only because almost none of the original team members or developers that worked on the big hits of yesteryear and made the company great are there anymore... so Rare would probably fit right in with all the other companies making casual games and shovelware for Nintendo's systems.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
