Well it's obviously undesirable of them to launch at any point later than their competition, much less a year later. Problem for them is that for the 2nd generation in a row they will not be first to market with a new console, and could potentially launch last all by themselves this time around instead of alongside a Ninty or M$ console.
It's going to be tough for Sony to launch the PS4 before the end of 2013... they've only really just begun to be profitable with the PS3, they're launching Vita next year at a big cost to them with no real guarantees of it being a huge success yet, and they've become increasingly reliant on AAA 1st and 2nd party games carrying their systems over the past gen, as the third party exclusives they enjoyed during the PS1 and 2 eras have dried up, so it's going to be tough assembling a killer launch lineup by 2013 for their next console as well.
