I'd be surprised if Sony, once again, releases the most advanced console next gen. I think that strategy really burned them this time around. While the PS3 is certainly profitable now and doing fine, Sony lost an awful lot of revenue the first few years due to it's restrictive, initial pricing, and that loss in sales is still affecting them now to a degree, i.e., software sales, peripherals...As a company, Sony's hurting right now and I'm not too sure how eager their board will be to dump excess money into R&D and manufacturing costs.
As for MS's attempts at creating the best hardware being problematic because of expensive motion controller tying up funds, I don't think that's an issue. The Kinect is what it is and other than refining the tech behind it, I don't really see them funneling off money to make a Kinect 2. I think Ms 'wants' to return to being king of the hill tech wise... and I'm looking forward to that.
We'll see. Wii U next year, Sony and MS to follow up in 2013.
