The key difference, i would imagine, is allowing for patches in the broadest sense of the word, that is, allowing downloadable content that is unforeseen by the software's main programming, which was impossible on Wii (those games were built with DLC in mind)

Black Ops, Conduit 2, and I'm sure the Wii version of MW3 all support patches. Nintendo themselves never took advantage of it.
