A year after competition, any later = bad

Even a year's lead proved decisive in their conflict with 360. Sony will have learned the lesson this time

The late launch was a rather miniscule contributing factor compared to the PS3's biggest weaknesses: No games, High price, lacking features, difficult architecture, etc. Those things were much more impactful to the PS3's success than launch period. It definitely didn't prove to be a "decisive" factor as you mentioned. The same should be said for the PS4, or any console for the matter.

BTW, OP, Are you going to fix the thread title?

The early lack of games was due to the advantage of developers having more time with the 360. The difficult architecture could have been surmounted the same way that the PS2's relatively difficult architecture was: more time with the system

If PS3 had come out in 2005, many of its problems would have been corrected

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
