Theres all these rumors flying around about the Xbox 360 succesor coming in late 2012 but so far i havent heard anything similar about the next playstation. The way sony keeps going on about the PS3's 10 year plan and the l;ack of news i dont even see them launching in 2013.

Anyway, the head start that the 360 got on the PS3 kicked its ass alot in the begining in various ways, this time, if the Next Box launches in 2012 how long can sony delay their next consoles launch before its too late to catch up.

Imo, they don't have to rush in to the next gen yet. They still have great devs. No need for fancy hardware updates.

I would say no more than a year later. Giving ms and nintendo more time than that will not be good, unless they decide to wait 5 years and launch than starting their own cycle of gens and giving enough time to have really superior hardware compared to their competitors.

Also, while there haven't been rumors about the new console, there have been rumors/reports about some Sony studios shifting their developments to the next console, implying that it isn't that far away.

It depends on the success of the Wii U and the next Xbox.

The late launch was a rather miniscule contributing factor compared to the PS3's biggest weaknesses: No games, High price, lacking features, difficult architecture, etc. Those things were much more impactful to the PS3's success than launch period. It definitely didn't prove to be a "decisive" factor as you mentioned. The same should be said for the PS4, or any console for the matter.

sony needs to do what microsoft did and release there console earlier

not to long specially in the west i wouldnt wait more than a few months less than 6 if i were sony

if MS gets a 1 year or 1 1/2 year in Euro again, next gen will be hard on sony market share wise, look at how long it took Sony to pass MS in EU that was with 360 having issues like non establish fan bass and console failure rate, these might not be as big of a issue next gen specifically fan base

more and more big titles are becoming multi plat between them going to next gen i believe this will continue. Sony really lost US to MS this gen, releasing same time as MS or a few months later would stop it from progressing more in US than it has this gen or maybe making up some ground, its really EU sony has to worry about not making gamers there wait to long, its there region to loose MS can only gain

imo sony extremely needs these things next gen, to release at a decent price about $100 cheaper than this gen, have a console that is superior than the competition that can show in 3rd party games, and maintain great thing it did this gen free online, no extra stuff to buy like batteries and specific overpriced HDDs, and beef up ther online capabilities ( a personal request would be to develop some above average exclusive SW that can appeal to the matured gamers that built them in the 90s and early 2000s) and they should be in great shape
