That's always the way. It's never the original scandal so much as the ensuing cover up. A lone pervert can be anywhere, but the fact that there are respected people who cover for him - whether out of loyalty to him or in a misguided attempt to preserve the image of the institution - is what's truly shocking. Besides, Sandusky is done. He's going away for life, whereas Paterno and Spanier would still be there if not for the firestorm even though they allowed him to continue in his sexual predations for about a decade after they became aware of them.
