you and me both. that signified the era in which games had basically been mastered at their level. Series and ideas were refined as well as they could go before making the jump to 3D. It was also a pivotal moment when a lot of great series (mario, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Donkey Kong) hit their prime and established MANY of the things we see in their sequels down the line.
