Except the fact that different marios have different gameplay styles and therefore are not of the same series. 

That's like saying Jak&Daxter and Jak X are not in the same series, or Crash Bandicoot 3 and Crash Team Racing are not in the same series

Yes, they aren't. Matter of fact Jak and Daxter HD collection is coming for ps3 and it doesn't contain Jak X.
