I know a late response but my reaction counts for everyone in this thread.   Many even Nintendo fans called the first year sales of the DS troublesome, in fact after the first year people really start to believe DS could fail and that PSP could pwn it...    While it is for sure an achievement that 3DS will sell more than DS in his first year it rather gives me a bad taste...

While the first year of the DS may have been "troublesome", beyond the price difference (which had a major influence), you are not taking one other major thing into account - that in this sales aligned comparison, the DS has already had its holiday season, while the 3DS holiday season is still ahead of it. The combination of this and its initial price are the main reasons why it took the 3DS time to surpass DS sales. It seems quite certain now that once the holidays are reached (any week now...), 3DS 1st year sales will not simply surpass but own DS 1st year sales.
