Why spend tons on advertising when you have a legion of fans to do it for you.
The extreme end of the SSB fanbase is quite rabid and will make sure people know about the game.
It's overhyped and all Nintendo had to do to pull it off is throw SSB fans a slow trickle of info to keep them foaming at the mouth.
BTW, I love SSB, it's one of the reasons I got a Wii, but the hype levels, on the net at least, probably aren't warranted.(granted it's still way below Halo 3 levels)
