I'm also somewhat concerned for the next generation and the role of console Platformers (even 3D ones). As much as Live/WiiWare/PSN were great for smaller 2D platformers like Limbo and Super Meat Boy, it also created a mentality that all 2D platformers should be relegated to downloadable distribution. The biggest casualty to this was Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (The game could have been huge as a full-game retail prduct. Huge! And here we are still waiting for Part 2).
Luckily New Super Mario Bros. Wii proved that the genre was far from obsolete, and without it I doubt we'd see games like Rayman or Kirby's Return to Dreamland (as both go for the 2D platformer with 4 player co-op) on the shelves.
I'm really hoping that New Super Mario Bros. Mii (the Wii U demo) turns out to be more than a demo. If Wii U can launch with such a game under its belt and does well (and I don't doubt it'll do well), the hopefully 3rd parties (and Nintendo itself) will continue to push this genre into the spotlight (which isn't the download scene just yet...).
