Well, truth be told, Miyamoto is probably a bigger icon than everyone else combined. It's not just the fact that he created the industries most famous characters; but also his longevity at the top. Iwata isn't even close, and anyone who is paying half attention can see that. Miyamoto to the videogame industry is like Elvis, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Paul Mccartney,Tupac Shakur, Mariah Carey, and Elton John combined for the music industry; Miyamoto isn't just an industry icon, he essentially created all of the greatest icons of the videogame universe aside from Pacman and Pikachu. If Miyamoto was cut off the top of the list, Iwata would certainly be a contender for #1 along with Koji Kondo, Will Wright, Uematsu, Kojima, Aonuma, and Peter Moore,
Some people who were once top industry icons and have really fallen out are Yuji Naka, Sid Meier, John Carmack, Akira Toriyama, Sakaguchi, Mitsuda, Hitoshi Sakimoto, Matsuno, Yamauchi, Shinji Mikami, etc...
