Well according to that Nintendo PR statement from
http://nintendoeverything.com/75878/nintendo-responds-to-september-2011-npd-data/
(this is the original source of all those npd sales reports i believe.)

3ds sold 260,000 units for the entire month of September in the U.S.
So thats ~60k a week. So this means Japan Sales of the 3ds were almost the same as the U.S. and Europe have been outselling 3ds by ~20k weekly. This is unprecedented.
So which means if u were to adjust the sales figures weekly for the past month it would look very odd compared to other regions to say the least.

To me the only way to make sense of this is to call BS on that "PR" statement and the 3ds actually sold 360,000 as reported here:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/september-npd-madden-gears-dead-island-are-hits/2#comments

This makes more sense because I would assume to overtrack by ~>120,000 is not possible. Unless something is really wrong with vgchartz.

1) September was a five week period for NPD, so that's 52k units per week for the 3DS.

2) postofficebuddy already pointed out that handhelds selling better outside of America is not unprecedented.

3) Nintendo's press release not only mentions the 3DS sales, but also the total for all three of their active platforms. So it's 100 % safe to say that 260k is the actual number for 3DS sales and the Joystiq article contains a typo.

4) VGC has been off by a lot before, including this year's infamous overtracking of Wii and DS lifetime sales where VGC's reported sellthrough for one of these two platforms exceeded the amount Nintendo shipped.

Hey can u link be to the original press release, I've been looking but the one on nintendoeverything seem to be the  origin for the other news outlets.

( oh and vgchartz has been this of before? even with 360,000 they still overtracked by ~30K I believe.)
