Well according to that Nintendo PR statement from
http://nintendoeverything.com/75878/nintendo-responds-to-september-2011-npd-data/
(this is where source of all those npd sales reports i believe.)

3ds sold 260,000 units for the entire month of September in the U.S.
So thats ~60k a week. So this means Japan Sales of the 3ds were almost the same as the U.S. and Europe have been outselling 3ds by ~20k weekly. This is unprecedented.
So which means if u were to adjust the sales figures weekly for the past month it would look very odd compared to other regions to say the least.

To me the only way to make sense of this is to call BS on that "PR" statement and the 3ds actually sold 360,000 as reported here:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/september-npd-madden-gears-dead-island-are-hits/2#comments

This makes more sense because I would assume to overtrack by ~>120,000 is not possible. Unless something is really wrong with vgchartz.

It's not that unprecedented to have a handheld selling more in Japan than in America. DS was regularly selling over 100k per week in Japan back in 2006. Random week:

http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly.php?reg=Japan&date=38858

Thats not a random week, thats the ~week NSMB launched. There were crazy fluctuations around those times. e.g. america went crazy couple weeks after for some reason  http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly.php?reg=America&date=38879 ( maybe america were slow on NSMB? dunno.)
But right now their isnt  any kind of software to cause such spikes in random regions, if Monster hunter or Super mario 3d land were out,  maybe.
