You're right that the things Halo did right is a bit overused today but, again, how is that Bungie's fault? You'd think that if *everyone* is copying them then they must have done something right then? Forget your personal preference and then tell me why everyone would chomp at the bit to copy them. The game became so popular for a reason, it wasn't something like GTAIV, it was a brand new IP on a new platform. |
While you do make a good point, it's still an 8/10 game getting 11/10 scores. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not remarkable, it's not the second coming of christ, and in today's market, dozens of games do it better, yet Halo is still on top (next only to Call of Duty.) it's a basic, uninspired FPS game that had great controls and a phenomenal soundtrack that ALSO happened to add two things to the genre that was new. I don't know anyone that liked the limitation of weapons or the regenerating health at the time, but they did like the multiplayer and they did feel the game was really well done.
The only 'revolutionary' thing it did was find a way to make consoles play FPS Games well. everything else was just good or acceptable. yes it introduced two new features, but that's not a revolution any more than adding a chainsaw gun was in Gears...it was just something they happened to do that caught on.
