I can see why they had those discussions. I was part of the Smogon community for a long while back in 2006-2008 but left since they had very strange and unclear rulings sometimes and I didn't see eye to eye with them (i.e like this one with Blaziken).
Anyway, I'm with you on the final statement, Feraligatr is also my favourite 2nd gen starter (And one of my favourite Water-Type as well).
