This is very common among first party Sony games. Naughty Dog has talked about using the HDD to improve textures since Uncharted 1.

im confused, how do all the Uncharted games get away with no installs or load screens (same goes for Killzone and God of War)

those games are the best looking of this generation, would they look even better with an install and load screens?

It all has to do with background streaming during cinimatics, an HDD in every PS3, and .pak + defraging content to make it as quick as possible to access.

This is a doc that they showed at GDC 2008 that very lightly describes how they did it. I will look around more to try and find a more in depth explanation.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.
