It's not that surprising. The franchise is rising in popularity and there were great bundles and custom 360 console available. That measn:
1 - you get some new fans buying a console along with the game as a bundle
2 - you get existing fans trading in standard 360 for a custom
3 - you get a general boost to the baseline due to advertising, new title, etc.
All this combines to give a nice boost. It'll drop off fairly quickly most likely in terms of HW. Growing franchises tend to get heavier on the front for bundle pickup, etc. but I expect Gears to have plenty of SW legs as well.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
