MS's policy is not a new thing

lol@some people thinking it's because MS

I think I remember reading that someone who works at SE said XIII only became linear because of the 360's limitations <-this is fake news

Yes, but doesn't mean it's not affecting publishers decision to utilize what Sony has given them, which it is. You think Microsoft didn't pay to get FFXIII onto their platform when it was PS3 exclusive for so long during development? MGS4 uses real-time cutscenes and it filled the bluray passed it's limit, they had to take stuff out, and those are pretty cheap vers CGI.

You also think it's a coincidence SE began development with the 6.7GB restriction budget even though if they felt like it they could use 21.7GB (they can't, else the engine won't fit on a xbox disc)? even if XIII-2 was on two discs, the game itself can't be larger than the single disc size because they have to put it on all discs, the discs would just contain different story sequence.

It's complicated, because for example Star Ocean, all the characters, monsters, weapons, items etc were on all discs despite when you get them, so you could back track to previous towns which were on a certain disc (if you picked up a character on disc 2 for example, you can stil use them if you need to back track to towns on disc 1), this wastes even more space which is what the guy from SE was pointing out I remember, you couldn't back track in XIII because SE didn't put the same contents on each disc.

But in the end it all comes down to, 'us first or nothing, equal or better version on 360' policy Microsoft is bending publishers over with. What is wrong with letting players back track or enjoy extra content if the PS3 can provide it?

And to answer another post, there won't be CGI on the PS3 ver unless the 360 gets it too, thats down to MS policy.
