Nintendo's warranty is a year long, and you can get it extended by an extra 90 days if you register it at Nintendo.com, so you don't need to be in a massive rush to get it fixed (not sure if it's the same in Canada, but that's what it's like in the US).
I sent mine for repairs recently, and I remember when I was going over their troubleshooting guide they had some stuff on disc read errors, so you might want to take a look at that before you pack it up.
