Silent Hill wasn't the biggest, genre-defining game in survival horror... Resident Evil was. And it wasn't the first either... Alone in the Dark and other PC games like 7th Guest came before it.
There were dozens of first person shooters of all varieties before Halo... military, sci-fi, stealth, movie license, etc. If anything. Doom deserves the title of genre-defining sci-fi FPS game.
And FFVII the defining JRPG that kicked off a genre? No. Most popular? Yes
