If it's the same situation as anything, then it'd be when Sony launched the first Dualshock controller part way through the PS1's life, after having the controller that just had a d-pad previously. Of course, that didn't split the userbase, despite essentially becoming the new standard, so I'm not sure why something that so far is an optional add-on will when that did not.
