Wow it's so sad that something like that would take 6 years to settle.

Even sadder is the same six years it takes to settle a fatal car accident claim when the driver drunk at the time runs down two females at a bus stop while they waited to catch a bus  early morning , one being my wife dies and the other her sister spends 3 months in hospital with multiple fractures to her legs, a broken pelvis broken left arm, broken jaw all her front teeth removed two large rods inserted to support her legs eventually removed and he pleaded guilty, the Insurer finally made a settlement six years latter on the front step of the court house the day of the trial, according to my sister in laws Lawyer the amount was pretty much what she would have been awarded if it went to judgement and the Insurer was always going to pay up so why six years ?.

I'm sorry man.

That's terrible. What was his sentence?

He was sentenced  3 months after the accident to 6 months prison and 7 years loss of licence. At the time in my State ,when you got a jail term you automatically got 1/3rd taken off for good behaviour plus you could apply for parole after 50% of your sentence  the trouble being  the 50%  of sentence was calculated  as being what remained after your good behaviour  so you  could apply for parole after completing 1/3rd of your sentence so if you got a 3 year sentence you could be out in 12months, another problem was the 1/3rd off for good behaviour was automatically deducted, but if you say assaulted a guard etc you might go to court and receive a 3 month addition to your sentence ( average for prison guard assaults ) but they never revoked  the good behaviour it was seen as part of your day one sentence and a right rather than the carrot it was intended to be and to rub salt into the wound the 3 month's extra would also get a 3rd cut off it .

in his case he served 4 months

He got 4 months!?

What he did was as good as murder, that is a pathetic sentence.
