it's not a flag for one country, it comes with st george's cross (England)  st Andrew's cross (scotland) and st patricks cross (ireland)

Yes, I understand that. What I'm asking is, if the Union flag came from something like this:

Why didn't they put St patrick's cross just in the middle of St Andrew's cross? Wouldn't that be easier?

Not 100% but this is my guess, as when the red line are the other side of the white, ie hung upside down, it's a distress signal, if the red was in the center you wouldnt be able to tell if it was upside down
