Iwata near firing??

Basically, this.

You don't need Malstrom-level voodoo powers to tell this is BS. Anybody seriously thinking of replacing Iwata right now is only interested in doing major damage to the company. Possibly Yamauchi needs to teach him a hard lesson or two, which is why he's still around after all, but there is nobody currently better than Iwata to run the company, not even remotely!

Yamauchi certainly didn't step down after the (far bigger) failures that were the Virtual Boy and the N64, and switching leaders just after a new console launched did nothing good for the GC.

There may be a cry coming from shareholders for a move like this, it would go along with their dissatisfaction with Nintendo's lack of support for smart-phones, but in the end of the day Nintendo isn't that heavily influenced by its shareholders, which is as it should be - considering some of them are clueless morons who only buy stock because they like the name...

Regarding hardware problems, both Sony and Microsoft had to overcome serious issues entering the HD era, so there is no reason why a far smaller company (with less experience in hardware manufacturing than Sony and less resources than MS) shouldn't struggle as well. This is even more true when you remember that what Nintendo is trying to accomplish with Wii U is as of yet an unsolved problem in the tech industry, making it a highly ballsy move, even for one like Iwata. Wireless HD video has been in development for years (buy companies like AMD among others) but AFAIK there is no industry standard protocol as of yet. It's possible Nintendo was expecting to have increased cash-flow from sales of the 3DS by this time to cushion their short-term losses, but they still have more than enough profits from this gen to withstand some rough days with Wii U.

Anybody thinking this transition was going to be a walk in the park for Nintendo doesn't know what they're talking about, but in the long run they will do fine - just like their competitors have.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!
