How do I get my free 1st month xbox live gold subscription trial?

If you sign up through the dashboard you should get 1 month automatically. Check xbox.com and click on 'My Account'. It should say Gold Trial on membership details. Or try downloading the warhammer demo, as that's currently gold only.
