The original PS3 played PS2 games because one of PS3's cores was a PS2 core, just smaller. With the Slim design they replaced that core with something cheaper. I have to admit, if a Final Fantasy HD collection comes along I won't miss PS2 backwards compatibility. I love the idea of having them in HD with trophies, it makes the experience better than the original.
And I think they learnt their lesson, it would be better for us and for them.
