I'm guessing this was a move to increase profits and give Nintendo some more price cutting leverage. This new model doesn't need the controller ports or memory card units. Cutting I dunno 10$ from the price or maybe a tad more. I don't know what other hardware was required to play GCN games.
But now with this new hardware maybe Nintendo can cut its price when Wii launches. Also the console appears it might be even smaller then the current Wii and probably lighter. I bet customers will love it and Nintendo knows when WiiU launches they will need to cut Wii's price accordingly! So good for both Nintendo and the consumer!
