Suppress your inner fanboy. I agree with you when you say Forza 4 will look better overall, but you can't deny Gran Turismo 5 looks better in certain aspects and that it will at least be CLOSE to Forza 4. Your comparisons are unfair, those screenshots that Turn 10 released might not be representitive of the final product. If you have the right lighting, textures and the perfect camera angle, you can make any car look identical to real life in PHOTO mode. The real comparison is between in-game performance (which can't be compared yet) and replay performance. While replays are not as important as in-game graphics, I still think GT5's replays looked better than the replay footage released for Forza 4 so far. I'm not quite sure why you said Gran Turismo 5 doesn't anti-alias. Replays are native 1080p whilst in-game graphics are 1280x1080 with 2xQAA, in 720p mode it's 720 with 4xMSAA. I can guaruntee you that in Gran Turismo 5, edges are smooth as butter, smoother than Forza 3 is and Forza 4 will be.
As for in-game footage, we will just have to wait and see! |
I agree, Forza 4 will look better, but GT5 will come close. However GT5 only looks that good on the prenium cars, which is limited to 200 or so, where Forza 4 will have 500 cars at launch, and probably 100 more with DLC.
Photo comparisions are more accurate then video because you can see what the car models look like in HD resolution. Those videos are 480p at best, and even then they are blurry, and dip in FPS. I know GT5 looks better then that video, and I can tell based off Forza 3, that video really undermines Forza 4's visual appearance. With video, you don't get to see what the graphics are really like because all the textures are smudged. Also I thought Forza looked better in that video, even with it in 480p, GT5 was just a higher budget trailer, where the Forza clip was just a replay.
Only thing native 1080p in GT5 is the car models in the garage. Replays, gameplay, and well everything else in the game is upscaled 1080p (which means they run at 720p, and are resized to 1080p). Also with 1080p vertical resolution, GT5 is prone to screen tearing. I'd take a small dip in MSAA to ensure no dips in lag or screen tearing anyday.
As for smooth edges, do you know what anti aliasing does? It blends pixelated shadows and distant objects to make them appear smoother. GT5 is pretty good, but can you honestly tell me that the shodows (especially on the dashboard) are smooth? The pixels are what would be equivalent to inches wide.
We will have to wait and see, but as it looks right now, Forza 4 will look better then GT5 overall. GT5 will likely beat Forza in some aspects, but I can't picture too many as Forza 4 will have had double the man power to develop it (4 years since Forza 2, lot of the engine re-used, 4 years for GT5, but Turn 10 has over twice as many employee's, and outsources).
I'm expecting a lot out of this game. Forza 3 is currently the best rated racing SIM, and I expect this to be better, so quite literally best SIM of the gen. I can tell, even before playing Forza 4 graphics are superior to GT5's in general, and you even agree. So all I have to wait on is to see if the SIM aspect is better then GT5 (which I also expect it to be), and to see if the new tracks are fun.
