As long as they don't merge with the NDP there will always be room for a center political party. The biggest problem this election is they targetted the left. If they had remained in the center they would have gotten votes from both more conservative voters and more liberal voters. But because they went after the NDP and completely ignored their center and right wing supporters they lost the election very badly.
Also I doubt the NDP can maintain this support in the next election. I mean the majority of their power comes from Quebec. If they can't keep Quebec happy then they too will take a serious hit next election. I know several ex-liberals who voted Conservative in the election. Partially due to me but they were pretty pissed at some of the Liberal's more left wing stances!
