These new current gen IPs plus Killzone are all million sellers but compared to the internet hype and the upfront media support they get I don't think they sell very well. LBP would have never made it to 4 million without bundles, more like around 2.5 million or 3 which its successor probably won't even reach. Many of these games are in the 1, 2, maybe 3 million range. Aren't these the IP's for which gaming media adopted the silly term AAA this gen? If so, these games aren't really successful compared to other new IPs this gen like Sony's own Uncharted, Gears of War or - to mention a successful new current gen "AAA" 3rd party IP - Assassin's Creed, which sold 12 million copies on PS3 so far. |
The 1,2 ,3 million games you talk about are successful. Sure, comparing it too a huge game like Assassin's Creed will make them appear to be unsuccessful, but the same can be done to hundreds of highly profitable games. Most of them are quite profitable for Sony. Some of them are actually unsuccessful though, like SOCOM 4 or Motorstorm.
Internet hype is not a good gauge for sells. Games often have plenty of hype with low sales. That doesn't necessarily mean the games aren't good. Sometimes it's because the fans of very passionate.

- Killzone is probably the only game with a very high budget that sold in the range you speak of. Even so, selling 2 - 3m is still very successful for any game. A game like Uncharted 2 can be profitable by only selling 2.5m. I don't know if Sony is content with these sales. We'd have to know what Sony's expectations for them were.
-I'm sure the gamers really like the games. Every Sony game can't sell like Uncharted 2. Simply because Sony fans don't like them as much as Uncharted 2. That doesn't they don't like the games in their own right. Also the Sony fans you speak of are likely internet forum dwellers. A game can have enormous hype on the internet. That doesn't automatically translate to actual sales.
- I don't know, maybe people don't want them.
- Yeah, of course they do. Just not as much as a game like Uncharted.
