Uncharted is pushing 5 Million. Little Big Planet sold 4, LBP2 will sell over 2. Killzone 3 will sell over 2 Million. Resistance 3 will sell over 2 Million. inFamous, MotorStorm, Ratchet... All are capable of a Million. Then you get the smaller, yet obviously profitable franchises... EyePet, SingStar, ModNation, Buzz, MLB... |
These are the IPs I mean. These new current gen IPs plus Killzone are all million sellers but compared to the internet hype and the upfront media support they get I don't think they sell very well. LBP would have never made it to 4 million without bundles, more like around 2.5 million or 3 which its successor probably won't even reach. Many of these games are in the 1, 2, maybe 3 million range. Aren't these the IP's for which gaming media adopted the silly term AAA this gen? If so, these games aren't really successful compared to other new IPs this gen like Sony's own Uncharted, Gears of War or - to mention a successful new current gen "AAA" 3rd party IP - Assassin's Creed, which sold 12 million copies on PS3 so far.
The sales of the current gen Sony IP's outside Uncharted make me think:
- These games are not cheap to develop, so is Sony really making money with them and are they really content with these sales?
- Do Sony fans really like these IP's as much as they claim and if so why does none of the games manage to sell 4 or 5 miilion copies or more?
- Most of Sony's games hit the half-price section pretty fast, so why don't sales pick up considerably at this point?
- Do neutral and new PS3 owners actually care about these new Sony IP's?
The most successful Sony 1st party game last week was Infamous 2 with 29.000 copies sold in its 8th week on the market, the next Sony game is outside the top 40, i.e. below 19.000 copies for the week, most probably LBP1 or GT.
