The real common denominator is not a quick price drop. That is an effect of slow sales. The real issue is lack of compelling games... specifically 3rd party games.

NES, SNES, and DS all had very good 3rd party games. Wii started off with a lot of 3rd party stuff, even it it wasn't the AAA stuff, but that tapered off in 2009 to pretty much non-existent and thus Wii sales have fallen quickly.

3DS is having the same issue. 3rd parties initially sound as if they were on board. Then it sold like crap. Then they all left. Then the price drop, hoping to get sales. If it gets sales and a solid jump before Vita, it may get 3rd parties and rebound like DS. However, without its Nintendogs or its Wii Sports.... its domed.
