Region locking does not play a big part in a system's fate. The GB and DS the only two massively popular systems that have been region free. The PS2 was region locked, so is the Wii and so was the PSX. Don't get me wrong, the 3DS' region locking is my biggest issue with the platform (but then again that also shows how little I care about the other 'problems'), but it sure as hell does not play anything more that a minimal part in a system's fate.
